Headlines - From School of rock to Jazz and Classic

Jazzvv Our annual GCSE/A Level Spring into Summer Concert showcased some excellent musical talent this week. Students from other years also contributed.  The Year 7 guitarist group who have been working with Mr Jameson were particularly impressive.  The range of music was truly eclectic as we listened to hard rock, mainstream pop, choral pieces, classical violin and piano finishing with jazz saxophone and the Big Band.  We are lucky to have such inspiring teachers, a richly resourced music area and students working with each other across the age range. I would like to replicate this vertical grouping that often happens spontaneously in sports or cultural performances in other learning areas.  Hopefully we can build in some all age learning in some of our curriculum activity days through the next academic year.  On the same evening this week we also were treated to some terrific drama performances from our GCSE students who put on extracts from ‘Journey’s End’ and ‘Bouncers’.  Not only was the acting very good but all the staging and technical aspects were of a high standard. Thanks to Mr Thomson for all his hard work setting the evening up.

Headlines - School Fund 2008/09

Letters requesting parental subscription to our school fund will be going out shortly.  We have not asked you for a subscription for about 2 years  even though traditionally it is  an annual contribution. Our School Fund is not part of the school’s main budget but it enables the school to subsidise a number of key events, clubs and societies.  The Abbey service, some of the prizes at prize giving and celebration events, start up funds for school clubs and support for the Duke of Edinburgh scheme all benefit from the School Fund.  Travel to sporting events is also paid for out of this money. It also provides a way we can help parents with significant financial difficulties send their children on school trips. In previous years we have raised up to £15,000 in this way so I hope everyone will make an effort. We suggest a sum of £35.  Needless to say there is no link whatsoever between this voluntary contribution and admissions to Verulam school.  Of course we will also accept larger contributions if parents wish.

TAG Rugby Festival

Tagrugby On Friday 18th April Saracens ran a Year 5&6 TAG rugby festival for the St.Albans School Sports Partnership primary schools.  Verulam's family cluster was represented by Camp and Fleetville Juniors.  Both schools performed very well with Camp in particular just missing out on a semi-final place after narrowly losing 2-1 to eventual runners-up, Colney Heath. Garden Fields, the winners from STAGS cluster beat them 5-4 in an end-to-end thriller of a final.  Helping on the day were two Verulam sixth formers: Matt Walker & Rupert Pearse, who were responsible for  warming up and coaching the teams in-between matches and even did some refereeing at the end.
Here they are pictured with Saracens club mascot - Sarrie the Camel. They were awarded their TAG Rugby Community Leader Certificates at the end as a result of attending a training course back in October, then coaching in Fleetville Juniors through the Autumn and Spring with the tournament being the final part of the award. They are pictured with the STAGS sports captains who also received their certificates. The boys will find out soon if they have been chosen to go forward and take a free place on an RFU Level Coaching award as reward for their efforts. All of this was part of their overall Sports Leaders UK Level 2 Community Award which they have taken as an option at school. Well done to them!
