Headlines…Teachers are the key resource

Toteach During Bill Clinton’s successful first presidential election campaign there was always a big sign up in all his headquarters which simply stated  ‘It’s the economy stupid’.  He wanted his staffers and volunteers to focus on the key issue of the campaign. I meet a lot of headteachers and you will find we are all obsessed with staffing, particularly in the Summer term.  For schools ‘it’s the staffing stupid’.  Despite government’s reassurances that the bad old times of teacher shortages are no more we still have great difficulty getting candidates for many posts but particularly for Maths, Science and Technology.  Recently several heads locally have also included English.  A national problem is made worse by the high cost of housing in St Albans and our proximity to London where teachers can earn up to £6000 more for the same job.  So we are particularly pleased to announce that we are fully staffed with qualified, specialist teachers in all posts from September 2008. A number of  teachers are moving on to promotion, retirement, travelling or returning overseas. Two of our longest serving teachers Mrs Burrage (Sociology)and Mrs Dixon (Humanities) are retiring.  Verulam veterans Mr Jones and Mr  Osborne  (both Humanities) are also going, although the latter is promoted just down the road to Beaumont! Mrs Gardner, who helped run so many trips and Mrs Nicholls, our German specialist, are moving on to challenges in new schools. Mr Harpham has been promoted to Deputy Head at Stoke Newington school in North London.
Mr Anderson (Head of English) and Mr Shibli (Head of Science) are moving to higher grade posts in new schools. Dr  Harnett is moving into a pastoral role at Sir John Lawes and Dr Bentley is going to Roundwood Park. A number of fantastic Australian teachers who have contributed several years to the school are returning south - Ms Piavanini, Ms Huggins and Mr Harrington. Mr Thomson from Drama is moving to a school closer to home and Ms Oppenheim is going travelling. Mr Gibson who taught some A level Maths is retiring. I’m sure parents will join me in wishing  all of them the best of luck.  The number of staff leaving is more than last year but is similar to our partner BSV consortium schools.  Our new publication ‘The Verulamian Magazine’ published in September will contain pictures and short biographies of those staff leaving.

SATS - another fine mess you got me into!

At the time of writing it is unclear whether the SATS KS3 results will be in school on Friday before teachers go on their well-earned holidays.  We will send results to parents as soon as we can but we may not be able to check them to see if they correspond to what we would expect. We will still do that analysis and follow up any concerns on our return. Remember last year the English results were not fully accepted by us and remained unreliable in our view.

Uniform Matters

Can we remind you that we expect the highest standards of uniform from our pupils.  Earrings are not allowed and will be confiscated.  No extremes of hairstyle, such as dyed hair,  shaved or patterned hair are allowed.  Pupils should wear a blazer, and when necessary, a dark coloured coat, and definitely no ‘hoodies’.
Thank you for your co-operation

Philosophy Masterclass

Philosophy On Friday 11th July, pupils ranging form Year 7 to 10 attended an introduction to the riveting subject of Philosophy. Throughout the day, we explored many different themes and concepts from a philosophical viewpoint, from if it was possible to achieve the pursuit of happiness, to whether there is an omnipotent demon controlling our every move and future. The practical analysis of philosophy was split up into several phases, which we systematically went through for each area we covered, beginning with a warm-up, such as an activity or game, to help us focus and concentrate, followed by a stimulus relating to the subject matter. In small groups, we’d then come up with some questions regarding the stimulus.  After selecting a few specific questions to discuss, we would present ideas and theories about them.  Finally, we would draw conclusions and reflect on what we had discussed during the session. Overall, the day was highly enjoyable and provided an interesting insight and taste of philosophy.

Year 7 Lakes Trip

Lakes2008 The Year 7s once again enjoyed a fabulous time in the Lake District.  After a 6am start from Morrison’s car park, the group arrived at the Lakes in time for dinner, with beefburgers being the favourite choice!  A full report of the trip is attached to this entry, where you can read about  mountain walking, orienteering, go-karting (Mr Anderson was the best driver!), water sports, Mrs Harrison being black-flagged at go-karting, more orienteering, more watersports, and a party!
